Issue #16 – The Risk List You’re Not Writing

Invisible risks that quietly derail projects (and how to surface them early).

Most PMs know how to build a risk register:

🟦 Schedule delays
🟦 Budget overrun
🟦 Resource gaps

But those are the obvious ones.
And they’re usually the ones you’re ready for.

It’s the invisible risks that get you.
The slow burns. The assumptions. The silence.

👀 Here’s what’s not on most risk lists:

  • A key stakeholder who’s quietly disengaged

  • A new system your team is too scared to admit they don’t understand

  • A vendor you’re depending on who’s missed two early deliverables

  • A change request process no one follows

These aren’t “hypothetical threats.”
They’re real indicators of things starting to slip!

But because no one names them, they don’t show up in the plan.
And that’s how they derail your project.

💡 Empowered PMs do this instead:

✔️ Make risk a conversation, not just a document
✔️ Ask the uncomfortable questions:

What assumptions are we making right now?
What could blindside us?
Where’s the friction nobody wants to talk about?

✔️ Surface signals early — before they grow teeth
✔️ Protect your team’s psychological safety so they’ll bring up the risks they see

It’s not about scaring people.
It’s about creating a culture of awareness and readiness.

Because the most dangerous risks aren’t the ones we can’t control.
They’re the ones we didn’t name in time.
