Issue #17 – Clients Change. So Should Your Plan.

Adapting without losing your leadership authority.

You finally got alignment.
The project was scoped, budgeted, approved…
And then — your client changed.

Maybe a new VP walked in.
Maybe priorities shifted.
Maybe they read something on LinkedIn and now they want “agile everything.”

Now your beautifully crafted plan?
It doesn’t fit anymore.

😩 What most PMs do:

  • Panic a little

  • Try to defend the original plan

  • Quietly hope the client reverts to “normal”

But here’s the truth:
Clients evolve. Organizations evolve.

If your plan can’t flex — it breaks.
If you can’t flex — you lose influence.

💡 Empowered PMs do this instead:

✔️ Reassess without getting defensive

“What are your new priorities?”
“What are you trying to solve with this shift?”
“How can we adapt without losing sight of what we’ve built?”

✔️ Re-anchor the project around outcomes
✔️ Co-create the updated path forward — so they feel ownership too
✔️ Lead the transition instead of reacting to it

Adaptation doesn’t make you look weak.
It proves you're tuned in, not checked out.

Plans are tools — not handcuffs.

🧭 And remember:
If they changed once, they’ll likely change again.

So build flexible authority.
The kind that adjusts without losing its center.
